Nigel is one of the finest guitarists on the London jazz scene today. Currently he can be seen all over the UK and Europe playing with The James Taylor Quartet. He has also appeared with performed with musicians including Pee Wee Ellis, Billy Jenkins, Martin Drew, Ben Clatworthy, Julian Siegel, Mike Gorman etc. As a guitarist he is influenced by the likes of Kenny Burrell and the gritty hammond organ combos of the 1960's led by such great Blue Note artists such as Jimmy Smith.

Tonight we welcome Matt Wates, whose sextet is currently one of the 'hottest' small groups in British jazz, winning Best Small Group in the British Jazz Awards in 2001 (Matt himself won the Rising Star Award in 1997). Matt Wates' fluent and lyrical style of playing has been likened to Cannonball Adderley and Paul Desmond. He has performed with Bucky Pizzarelli, John Colianni, Georges Arvanitas, Helen Shapiro, Don Weller, Bobby Wellins, Dusko Goykevich, Duncan Lamont, Ian Shaw, Norma Winstone and Peter King, and has recorded with Paz, Roadside Picnic, Itchy Fingers, NYJO, the Michael Garrick Big Band, Sax Appeal and Jamie Cullum.

Simon Allen is one of the most impressive young saxophonists on the London Scene. He has performed at many major UK venues and festivals and has worked with an astonishing array of top musicians including Kenny Wheeler, Iain Ballamy, Django Bates, John Paracelli, Steve Waterman, Alan Barnes, Don Weller, Ben Castle and Tina May.

Freddie Gavita began learning trumpet aged 8 with legendary jazz trombonist Dave Amis (Keith Tippett, Dedication Orchestra) and rose through the ranks of the Norwich Students Jazz Orchestra, winning the National Music for Youth Big Band competition in 2000. He recorded with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra earlier this year, appeared on the Direct Line television commercial soundtrack and has played with the John Dankworth Orchestra, Tim Garland and Peter King as well as at Ronnie Scotts with his own quintet. Freddie has just started his third year at the Royal Academy of Music studying jazz under Gerard Presencer and Pat White.
